Is Your Bike Safe?

We recommend that you check your family's bicycles for these safety features:

SEAT: Adjust frequently for comfort and growth. Tighten seat and post nuts securely, leaving at least 2½" of seat post down in the frame.

HAND AND COASTER BRAKES: Must brake evenly every time without slipping. Securely fasten coaster brake arm to frame.

CHAIN: Check frequently for damage and stretch. Readjust if needed. Chain should be oiled frequently with light oil.

PEDALS: Pedals should have reflectors for safe night riding. Be sure pedal axle is securely tightened against the crank arm. Replace immediately if pedals are worn or damaged.

BELL OR HORN: Be sure it works properly -- loud and clear.

HANDLEBARS AND GRIPS: Adjust often for comfort and growth. Keep at least 2½" of handlebar stem down in the frame, then tighten securely. Replace handlebar grips when worn out. They should fit snugly.

LIGHTS AND REFLECTORS: Equip your bike with reflectors and lights. They should be visible at dusk and at night - 500' from headlights and 300' from the rear reflector. Use state approved reflectors. If they are damaged, replace immediately.

TIRES: Inspect tires often for wear and leaks. Remove anything embedded such as glass or nails. Keep inflated to the correct pressure which is stamped on the side of the tire.

WHEELS: Should rotate smoothly without wobbling. Realign if necessary. Keep axle nuts tight.

SPOKES: Keep spokes tight and replace broken ones promptly.
