Auto Safety Features You Can Expect in the Future

Consumers are demanding a whole new generation of safety features for their cars and trucks. Here is what you can expect in the future.

Universal Attachments for Child Safety Seats - There may be a standardized way for parents to anchor child safety seats in all vehicles made in 1999.

Daytime Running Lights - These are low-beam headlights with reduced brightness that automatically turn on with the engine and make the car more noticeable during the daytime.

Head Impact Protection - Manufacturers will add padding or some type of energy-absorbing feature to the driver and passenger doors, in the roof above the driver, and in the framing around the windshield.

Location/Communication Systems - These systems link a car's cellular phone to a global positioning satellite system. They can provide directions for a driver or summon assistance to an exact location in an emergency.

Traction Control and Stability Systems - This is crash-avoidance chassis technology which helps a driver keep control over a vehicle during challenging maneuvers or on poor road conditions.

Reinforced Doors - An increasing number of vehicles are being manufactured with door beams and structural components around the door opening which can minimize impact in the event of a side crash.

What still lies ahead? While frontal impacts are the most frequent, side impacts can cause massive injuries. Auto manufacturers are studying whether side air bags significantly help protect passengers in a side impact.
