Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec are all part of a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). A proton pump is actually a protein that produces the stomach acid needed for food digestion. Too much of this acid, however, can lead to the common discomfort of heartburn, moderately to severely painful gastric ulcers, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), an excess stomach acid disorder that can damage the esophagus. PPIs such as Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec are all designed to provide relief from such complaints by inhibiting proton pump actions.
Unfortunately, many PPIs are linked to a broad spectrum of side effects that include: diarrhea; constipation; headaches; stomach pain; drowsiness; dry or cotton mouth, and gas related bloating. Additionally, long-term PPI usage has also been linked to hypomagnesemia, a disorder related to low magnesium levels in the blood. Hypomagnesemia can cause angina (chest pains), tremors, seizures, and irregular or accelerated heartbeat. Finally, prolonged PPI usage, particularly by people over the age of 50, has been linked to a significantly increased risk of bone fractures of the wrist, hip and spinal structures. As a result, the FDA is now requiring bone fracture warnings on the labels of Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec, as well as other PPIs.
