We are currently investigating reports of prematurely failing artificial hip implants. On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. recalled 93,000 hip implant devices. The recall included two different hip implant devices: the ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The defective products became available in July 2003. According to a recent DePuy test, 1 in every 8 people who received either the ASR resurfacing device or the ASR total hip replacement need a second surgery. DePuy calls these “revision surgeries.”
WHAT KINDS OF PROBLEMS DO THE RECALLED HIP IMPLANTS CREATE?
Symptoms of malfunctioning hip implants include pain, persistent discomfort, swelling, problems walking, and audible popping or clicking. These symptoms can be caused by a loosening of the implant, fracture of the bone around the implant, or dislocation of the implant. Additionally, metal-on-metal wear in the implant creates debris. This debris can damage muscle, bone, and nerves around the hip.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I RECEIVED ONE OF THE RECALLED HIP IMPLANTS?
Speak to a doctor as soon as possible. To assure your health and the continued functionality of your hip implant, additional testing and monitoring may be necessary. DePuy has stated it will cover “reasonable and customary costs of monitoring and treatment for services.” Patients who have received a malfunctioning ASR hip implant should be aware of their legal rights before contacting DePuy or Johnson & Johnson. If you received an ASR hip implant and are experiencing problems, you may qualify for compensation for physical damage, additional surgeries, pain, and resulting disability.
