What if the other driver doesn’t have enough insurance? Unfortunately, that’s a common question. The answer may be under your own auto insurance policy. If you were fortunate enough to be offered and to have purchased what’s called uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance protection, then your insurance company is liable for the balance of your damages up to the amount of your policy. This uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance coverage will also protect you if the other driver is completely uninsured or if you’re the victim of a hit and run accident, but be careful. Do not settle with the other driver without obtaining the consent of your own insurance company otherwise you may loose your right to those benefits.
