On August 19th, 2017, NBC and Telemundo are teaming up with local shelters to help people and pets come together to find forever homes. For one day only, pet adoption fees will be waived or reduced, making it easier than ever to find the pet of your dreams.
Roberts and Roberts has a personal connection with Clear the Shelters. Here are their stories:
Now it’s your turn: make your own rescue story! Here are a few things to consider when making your decision:
Different shelters = Different Requirements for adopting
Rescues and Shelters will be open at similar times, but each will have their own protocols to follow. Some may require different applications; some may have a small waiting period. Most require a valid license. Ensure your current pets are up-to-date on all vaccinations, as this may also be an adoption requirement.
Check with your local shelter/rescue of choice beforehand to ensure you meet all requirements to be ready for August 19th! Below is a map of participating organizations.
What should I consider before adopting?
There are many things to consider when deciding to add your new best friend to your family! Cost, lifespan of the pet, your lifestyle, housing/landlord obstacles, and future plans are some of the most important.
Weigh the pros and cons of adopting a pet to make sure you are making the correct decision for you and your furbaby.

I can’t adopt right now. Is there anything else I can do to help?
Rescues and Shelters always have needs that go beyond adoption! Although every shelter has its own set of priorities, almost all can benefit from volunteers and donations of money, food, treats, supplies, and adoption fees.
If you prefer to help in other ways, ask if you could provide transportation to new animals landing homes that aren’t just around the corner. Break out your crafting or sewing skills to make beds and toys for animals. Take pictures of new additions to shelters and spread the word on social media that they are looking for a new home.
Do you have a particular set of skills? Lend your accounting, design, or coding knowledge to your local shelter. Let them focus on the animals!
