The Dangers of Road Rage and How to Manage ItRoad rage — aggressive driving or angry behavior by a driver — is becoming an increasing problem on our roads, leading to injury accidents and even deaths that could have been easily avoided by modifying our behavior.

While you cannot control another driver’s behavior, you can control how you react to it. Here are some tips on managing road rage from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

Get plenty of sleep — the National Sleep Foundation reports that sleep deprivation is a contributing factor to road rage. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep to keep those feelings of annoyance and anger at bay.

Plan ahead — road rage tends to happen when we’re in a hurry to get somewhere. If you plan ahead and leave enough time to deal with any traffic jams or detours you may encounter, you will be calmer in the car.

Don’t take it personally — many of us tend to make our cars an extension of ourselves. Competitive people tend to drive more aggressively. If you drive while you’re angry, you also tend to take your anger out on other drivers. Remember that you are not your car.

Listen to relaxing music — loud or aggressive music tends to make people anxious, which can lead to road rage. Tune in to some relaxing music or listen to an audio book while you drive to keep yourself relaxed.

Take a breath — if you find yourself clenching the wheel, take a few deep breaths to relax yourself. If you’re on a long trip, stop at least once every three hours. Keeping comfortable will help you stay stress-free.

Do unto others — treat fellow drivers as you would want to be treated. By extending basic courtesies like allowing other cars to merge, you make your driving experience a more positive one.
