The FDA is warning parents to check their medicine cabinets for homeopathic teething products. Last year they discovered high levels of belladonna, a potentially fatal berry for infants, in products such as Hyland’s Homeopathic Teething Gel and Tablets. This toxic ingredient has been involved in the deaths of at least ten children and severe reactions in 400 others.
Belladonna, when ingested by adults, can cause hallucinations, rapid heart rate, blurry vision, confusion and even convulsions. In children, even a small dose the size of two berries can be fatal. Although Hyland’s no longer sells these products, there was no recall to notify parents of its potentially dangerous effects. The company says it “remains confident in the safety of our products and has not been presented any data or information that contradicts the data we have.” The FDA is urging potentially unaware parents to check their medicine cabinets and dispose of any unused portions.
