According to KidsHealth.org, children who are 1 month to 1 year old have a heightened risk of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In the U.S., this syndrome alone causes 2,500 infant deaths every year. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests a few ways to protect your child from SIDS.

  • A child should receive all doctor-recommended immunization shots. Vaccinating a child reduces their risk of SIDS by 50 percent.

  • It is perfectly safe for a child to sleep in a parent’s room, but a child should never sleep in a parent’s bed.

  • Bumper pads should not be used in a child’s crib; they can cause suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment.

  • No extraneous items should be placed in a crib, this includes: pillows, blankets, toys, wedges, and positioners.

  • When sleeping, a child should be placed on his/her back, on a firm surface.
