This means that if you drive Texas roads, you have a little less than a 1 in 5 chance of encountering an uninsured motorist. And if you’re involved in an accident with one, you need to know your options.

The simple solution is to buy your own insurance. Everyone should have uninsured/underinsured coverage on his or her car. This coverage provides that if you are injured in a car wreck through the fault of someone who has no insurance or not enough insurance to cover all of your damages, then your insurance company will pick up the difference up to the limit of your uninsured/underinsured coverage.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is supposed to be mandatory in Texas unless you sign a rejection. Unfortunately, many insurance companies routinely have you sign a rejection without explaining the significance of the rejection. Many times, injured people often believe that they have “full coverage” and assume they have uninsured motorist coverage.

Unfortunately, what a consumer believes is full coverage and what your insurance agent thinks is full coverage can be two different things. Insurance agents tend to call full coverage liability insurance, which is required by law, and comprehensive and collision, which protects your car. There is nothing in their ‘full coverage’ that protects you.

If you are not certain, call your insurance agent. Specifically ask if you have uninsured/underinsured coverage. If you do, make sure that you have more than minimum limits. There is no limit on the amount of damage a careless driver can do.
