Still More Child Fatalities from Unstable IKEA Chests

Still More Child Fatalities from Unstable IKEA ChestsIn July 2015, IKEA announced a repair program affecting more than 27 million chests and dressers after two children were killed when the company’s Malm model chests tipped over and fell on them. The safety warning, issued by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission and IKEA, encouraged consumers to secure the chests and dressers with a free wall anchoring repair kit provided by the company via their website and a toll free number.

Following that safety warning, a 22-month-old Minnesota boy was killed in February 2016 when an IKEA Malm dresser fell on him. The boy’s parents had purchased the Malm chest in 2012; since the product was the subject of a “repair program” and not an official recall, it has not been added to product recall databases that can be monitored by consumers.

At the time of the repair program announcement, the CPSC advised that, “Consumers should immediately stop using all IKEA children’s chests and dressers taller than 23 ½ inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29 ½ inches, unless they are securely anchored to the wall. The free wall anchoring kit should be used to secure MALM and other IKEA chests and dressers to the wall.”

None of the chests involved in the child fatalities were anchored to a wall. In addition, the CPSC has received 14 reports of tip-over accidents involving IKEA chests. The company said it has issued more than 300,000 anchoring kits to consumers; however, IKEA has sold more than 7 million Malm chests and 20 million other chests in the U.S.

According to the CPSC, two children are killed every month in the U.S. from furniture or televisions tipping over. Injuries from falling furniture occur every 24 minutes.
