Tips on Keeping Teen Drivers SafeAccording to the Texas Department of Transportation, there were 242 teens killed on Texas roadways in 2015. More than half of these were in the driver’s seat at the time of the fatal accident.

Researchers say that teen drivers do not think about risk the same way adults do, leading them to take bigger chances when they’re behind the wheel – leading one teen safety advocate to say “there’s no such thing” as a safe teen driver.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has provided parents with tips on how to protect teen drivers:

  • Participate in your teen’s driving education; don’t just rely on standard driver education training.
  • Enforce Texas’ graduated license law with your teen driver.
  • Require the use of seat belts every time your teen gets in the car.
  • Have a zero-tolerance policy for mixing drugs and alcohol with driving.
  • Restrict how many people can be in the car with a teen driver, as well as night driving.
  • Choose the right vehicle for your teen to drive. Avoid those that are too sporty (encourages speeding) or that are more likely to be involved in a rollover crash.

Proving who was at fault in a Texas car crash requires a thorough understanding of motor vehicle laws, accident reconstruction and engineering principles, and a commitment to uncover all of the relevant facts surrounding a crash.
