After a mild decrease, traffic deaths are once again increasing in Texas.  If 2014 is like every other year in Texas since 2000, there will not be a single day that a Texan is not killed in a car crash somewhere in Texas.

Many experts attribute the increase to more distractions in the vehicle.  With cell phones, texting, navigation systems, and entertainment systems all within a hand’s reach of the driver, the trend will continue.  Three other reasons for the increased number of traffic fatalities according to the Department of Public Safety are speed, failure to use seatbelts, and impaired driving.  The most frequent time for an automobile accident involving a driver under the influence of alcohol is somewhere between 2:00 a.m. and 2:59 a.m.  This is not surprising since in many counties, bars will close at 2:00 in the morning.

Similarly, almost half of all people killed in traffic accidents were not wearing seatbelts.  We have too often reported on traffic accidents where no one is injured except those occupants who are not wearing seatbelts.

Another striking trend is that 55 percent of fatal accidents occur in rural areas.  This is usually the result of people traveling too fast on roads that were not designed for high speeds or in areas they are not familiar with.  Rural Texas roads are known for sharp curves and large trees that are too close to the roads.

The last day that Texas did not have a single person killed on its highway was November 7, 2000.  The last time before that was February 28, 1995.  In Texas, there is a car crash every 75 seconds, and a person is killed in a car wreck every 2 hours and 35 minutes.
