Zofran is a drug that was approved by the FDA in 1991 to treat nausea and vomiting in patients who have undergone serious surgery or in patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer.

Medical research has since shown that Zofran has been linked to birth defects in infants, especially those whose mothers were prescribed the drug during the first trimester of their pregnancy. This is due to the fact that the first trimester is the most crucial time in a pregnancy for the infant's development. Birth defects associated with Zofran use during the first trimester include:

  • Cleft lips and pallets
  • Kidney failure
  • Heart defects or murmurs
  • Jaundice

The negative side effects of Zofran, however, are not limited to the baby's health. Zofran has been linked to health risks for the mothers as well. Some of the most common side effects that have reportedly occurred in expectant mothers who been prescribed Zofran are:

  • Rashes, Itching, or Hives
  • Body Swelling
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Irregular Heartbeat

Unfortunately, the manufacturer of Zofran, GlaxoSmithKline, promoted Zofran for off-label (or non-approved) use, such as treating routine morning sickness in pregnant women. The manufacturer of Zofran has since pled guilty to criminal healthcare fraud charges. However, many families are finding themselves financially burdened raising children with birth defects linked to Zofran.
