Benicar HCT (olmestartan medoxomil hydrochlorothiazide) has been prescribed by physicians since 1995 to help lower blood pressure (hypertension) in millions of patients. The two primary drugs that create this medication; Olmestartan, is classified in a group of drugs known as angiotensin II reception antagonists, which relax blood vessels allowing for blood to flow more easily and to keep blood vessels from narrowing and; Hydrochlorothiazide, which is a diuretic which helps your body rid of excess water and salt via urination.
High blood pressure is a common disease in many people that can be treated simply by having a healthier diet and exercising regularly. High blood pressure can lead to strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems; in many cases medication such as Benicar HCT will be prescribed by a physician to help lower blood pressure if good dieting habits and exercise are not producing desired results. Benicar, like most prescription drugs has some common side effects such as dizziness, headaches or congestion as your body adjusts to receiving the medication. There are other more serious side effects associated with Benicar that could lead to severe damage to your body. These symptoms include dehydration, extreme thirst, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, confusion, decrease in vision, eye pain and persistent diarrhea. Since Benicar HCT contains a diuretic, it may lead to severe dehydration and some of these other symptoms if one does not stay hydrated.
Some potential side effects though, failed to be reported. Benicar HCT in some patients has lead to lawsuits against its creator, Daiichi Sankyo. Daiichi Sankyo insufficiently tested this drug before its release and failed to warn about severe gastrointestinal issues. These side effects include:
- Villous atrophy, this condition causes the lining of the intestines to lose texture. Loss of this texture makes it difficult for one’s body to absorb nutrients, leading to severe diarrhea, malnutrition and hospitalization.
- Other intestinal conditions such as sprue-like enteropathy, which also includes severe and chronic diarrhea and substantial weight loss.
- Severe chronic diarrhea caused by taking Benicar HCT can be often mistaken for Celiac disease, which is an allergy to gluten.
