About Neck Injuries in Texas Car Crashes

The neck is actually an extension of the spine. The neck consists of seven bones called the cervical vertebrae. Cushioning those bones are spongy discs in between the vertebrae that are also part of the neck. Finally, the neck also consists of nerves as well as soft tissue, muscles, joints and cartilage.

When you are involved in an auto accident, you may damage any part of your neck. You may injure the vertebrae or break bones. You could also damage the discs that cushion the bones, or you could damage the soft tissue. The severity of a neck injury and the symptoms that result will vary, depending upon what part of the neck is injured and how severely it is damaged.

Some of the possible neck injuries that you might experience after a car accident include:

  • Broken vertebrae and bones — A broken neck can be extremely serious, especially since the vertebrae in the neck protect the spine. A broken neck can lead to paralysis or can even be fatal, depending on the extent of the damage.
  • Pinched nerves — The nerves in your neck can become damaged by little pieces of bone or by injured discs in the neck. You may experience muscle weakness, numbness and pain in the areas that the nerve supplies sensation and electrical signals to.
  • Disc injuries — You may experience either a slipped or a ruptured disc as a result of too much pressure on the neck. Pain is often intense with disc injuries.
  • Damage to your trachea or larynx –The larynx and trachea are at the front of the neck and can be crushed or injured as a result of blunt-force trauma in a car accident.
  • Neck sprains — These occur when you damage the soft tissue in the neck. Usually, it is the ligaments that are damaged in a neck sprain. The ligaments may tear or they may simply stretch. Neck sprains will normally heal on their own with rest and relaxation, but pain and stiffness are common as a result of neck sprains.
  • Neck strains — These are also a form of soft-tissue injury. However, neck strains result when the muscles are torn or stretched, as opposed to the ligaments. Neck strains are commonly known as whiplash.

Whiplash Injuries in Texas Car Accidents

Injuries resulting from whiplash cost an estimated $30 billion every year in losses throughout the United States. These costs include not just medical expenses but also lost productivity, because people may be severely impacted by the pain and damage associated with whiplash.

Whiplash occurs in situations where someone is jerked forward or backward with excessive force. This results in the lower neck bones becoming hyper-extended and the upper bones in the neck becoming hyper-flexed. This position is not a natural one for the neck, and, as a result, the ligaments, muscles and facet capsules can sustain damage.

Symptoms of whiplash can range from annoying to extremely painful and impairing. In general, the symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Pain and stiffness in the neck and/or shoulders
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Arm weakness or discomfort
  • Fatigue
  • Jaw pain
  • Visual disturbances and other eye problems
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Back pain.

As a result of these symptoms, some people who suffer from whiplash may also experience anxiety, anger, depression or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Whiplash symptoms can persist for a long time, and whiplash is often expensive to treat, requiring neck braces, physical therapy, pain medication and other medical intervention.

Whiplash can occur even in slow-moving accidents, because it doesn’t take much force to cause whiplash. Serious whiplash injuries can occur even in accidents where there is little or no damage to the vehicles. Whiplash is especially common in situations where a car is rear-ended, but it can happen in any accident situation.

Proving damages is more challenging in some neck injury cases than in others. However, the testimony of medical experts as well as medical records and photographs of injuries can help an injured victim to recover the compensation he or she deserves after sustaining a neck injury in a Texas auto accident.
