Wright Medical Technology, Inc. has been manufacturing a variety of orthopedic joint implant devices since 1950, though, the Memphis, Tennessee headquartered company’s primary focus has always been on knee and hip replacement technologies and implant devices. The smaller-sized company only controls approximately 2% of the U.S. market, but it has contributed to innovations in its field with the introduction of its ceramic on ceramic (hard to hard material) hip joint component coupling. The ceramic joint components are reported to result in less wear than hard to soft material joint connections.

Unfortunately, Wright has enjoyed less success and has come under intense medical and legal profession scrutiny due to its manufacture of metal on metal (MoM) joint connections found in its CONSERVE Plus total hip joint replacement implant. The device utilizes a large femoral head and cement-free, porous coated cup made from cobalt chromium. The design and material use is similar to numerous other hip joint replacement implants that have had a high rate of failure, and the CONSERVE Plus is no exception. Numerous patient complaints detail serious to severe problems with the implant that include, but are not limited to: persistent leg, hip and groin pain; atypical fractures of the joint implant; impaired ability to walk and pronounced limp; hip joint as well as adjacent area swelling, and metallosis (metal poisoning due to microscopic, metal on metal wear particulates in the bloodstream).

The FDA has issued numerous warnings that metallosis can cause a number of problems that can involve the heart, kidneys, thyroid gland and nerves. Symptoms of metallosis can include: chest pains; overall numbness; shortness of breath; fatigue; hearing and vision problems, rapid weight gain and more. Finally, a number of patients must undergo revisionist surgery to replace Wright’s defective implant, potentially dangerous surgery that must be followed by lengthy periods of painful physical rehabilitation.

Despite its defective design and numerous patient injuries, as of January, 2014, Wright has yet to issue a recall of its CONSERVE Plus device. As a result of this and other alleged negligent actions, numerous and nationwide lawsuits are now pending against Wright Medical, Inc.
