Zimmer is the global surgical device manufacturer that makes the Zimmer Spine Interbody Spacer System that utilizes what is known as the PEEK Ardis Inserter, which is a spacer that is placed between individual spinal cord segments during varying types of surgeries. The individual spacers are only temporary, and they are removed subsequent to completion of a surgical procedure and prior to final closure of the open wound.
Unfortunately, a number of the PEEK Ardis Inserter devices have shattered into small fragments during the operation. This separator breakage can result in up to an hour of additional time for the surgeon to locate and remove each fragment, thus exposing the patient to the additional risks associated with longer periods of general anesthesia. Other problems associated with the spacer breakage can include additional blood loss and ruptures of the spinal cord lining (dural tears).
As a result of the Inserter shattering, Zimmer has initiated a voluntary recall of its entire inventory of 315 units of the complete Interbody Spacer System that had been sold since 2008. Additionally, Zimmer’s recall had soon been followed by the FDA’s most urgent and serious, Class I Recall of the spinal surgery system due to serious patient injuries, including permanent damage to the spinal cord. The FDA also issued an additional warning that shattered fragments that are not located by a surgeon and left inside a patient’s body could lead to long-term health risks such as permanent disability or death.
