Fentora tablets had won FDA approval in September, 2006, and the powerful opioid quickly soared in popularity with approximately 80,000 prescriptions for the drug written within the first year of its release. All forms of fentanyl are extremely powerful narcotics with approximately 100 times the pain killing properties of morphine. As a result, the FDA had only approved Fentora for cancer patients whose severe pain could not be managed with any less potent analgesic.
Additionally, the drug is only intended for use by opioid tolerant patients who had been directed by their physician to place the tablet between the gum and cheek to effect (in a perfect world) a carefully determined dosage of the drug into the bloodstream.
Unfortunately, physicians had not been sufficiently informed about critically important safe dosages, as well as adequately warned about the dangers of off-label (non-FDA approved) use in non-cancer and/or non-narcotic tolerant patients. This lack of timely information had soon caused doctors to prescribe Fentora for off-label use to treat headaches, chronic back pain and other ailments.
As a result, a series of narcotic overdoses have since occurred, a number of which had been fatal. Today, numerous lawsuits against Cephalon allege negligence relevant to the drug manufacturer’s failure to specify safe dosages for cancer patients only.
