Omontys (peginesatide) is manufactured by Affamax, Inc. in collaboration with its partner, Takedo Pharmaceutical. The drug had been FDA approved in March, 2012 as a treatment for anemia (low red blood cell count) in dialysis patients who suffered from serious kidney disease or failure. The drug is designed for once monthly administration by subcutaneous or intravenous injection.
Unfortunately, after the drug had been prescribed to approximately 25,000 dialysis patients and less than a year after its approval, on February 24, 2013, the FDA announced its most serious, Class I recall of all distributed lots of Omontys. The total withdrawal of the anemia drug had been the result of several, statistically significant reports to the FDA regarding severe allergic reactions to Omontys, including anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock. Complications of anaphylaxis can include: respiratory arrest; brain damage; cardiac arrest; disability; kidney damage, and death.
According to FDA reports, the allergic reactions occurred at the time of Omontys administration or a short time thereafter. And while the initial reports only involved 19 such reactions, the fact that three fatalities had occurred was sufficiently alarming to warrant the federal agency’s total recall of the drug.
