Zithromax (azithromycin) is a globally popular antibiotic manufactured and promoted by Pfizer, Inc., the world’s single largest pharmaceutical company. Subsequent to its FDA approval in 2004, Zithromax had become many physicians’ antibiotic treatment of choice for a condition known as Acute Bacterial Sinusitis (ABS). The drug’s popularity was and continues to be a direct result of its once-daily for three days treatment regimen; this compared to numerous other antibiotics that require multi-dosages each day for 7-14 days.

Zithromax’s particularly potent formulation is credited for the far more convenient ABS treatment, a drug regimen therapy patients are far more likely to complete. Due to the drug’s popularity with doctors and patients alike, in 2011, Zithromax had earned Pfizer over $450 million in sales.

In addition to its favored use as a treatment for ABS, the antibiotic has also been shown to be effective in combating a number of other bacterial infections. Unfortunately, scientific study evidence had begun to link Zithromax use with serious to fatal side effects. In May, 2012, the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine had conducted a study that established a connection between Zithromax usage and an alarming increase in the incidence of the development of irregular heartbeat rhythms that could be fatal among particular groups or classes of patients. In March, 2013, based on the above-mentioned report, the FDA had issued a warning about Zithromax’s potential for causing fatal cardiac events.

In addition to the FDA warning about irregular heart rhythms, the federal agency had also cautioned physicians and their patients about the powerful antibiotic’s link to interference with the heart’s critically important electrical activity functions. Such a disruption of electrical impulses could lead to a condition known as Prolonged QT Interval, which describes an irregularity in heart muscle contraction timing that, in some patients, could lead to sudden death. As a result, numerous and nationwide lawsuits allege that Pfizer knew or should have known about its antibiotic’s potentially deadly side effects, but the company had been negligently slow to warn physicians and the general public because, once again, a pharmaceutical company had put drug profits ahead of patient safety.
