Tesla Class Action Suit Claims Autopilot Feature is Defective

Tesla-Class-Action-Suit-Claims-Autopilot-Feature-is-DefectiveElectric car manufacturer Tesla is facing a class action lawsuit from buyers who allege that they were misled by the company when they purchased an autopilot feature for Model S Tesla sedans.

Tesla Model S buyers who purchased the $5,000 “Enhanced Autopilot” package said the company promised them that they would receive the extra features via software updates by December 2016. However, the complainants said that the software has been delayed, is incomplete and, according to the lawsuits, “essentially unusable and demonstrably dangerous.”

Currently, the only enhanced features made available by Tesla have been the Traffic Aware Cruise Control (TACC) feature and a front collision warning system. The complaint states that these features are already available on many vehicles costing far less than the Tesla Model S. In addition, the complaint notes that the TACC system is “dangerously defective.”

The class action suit cites online reviews and videos that show Tesla Model S vehicles with the autopilot in use crossing yellow lines, veering towards curbs and “behaving as if a drunk driver is behind the wheel.” The suit alleges that Tesla had to know of the defects in its TACC system and asserts that the company has used buyers as “beta testers of half-baked software” that is dangerous to drivers.

Plaintiffs from Colorado, Florida and New Jersey have joined the class action suit to date, which seeks an injunction to halt what they term deceptive marketing practices by Tesla and to provide a buyback option to Class Members.

The plaintiffs stated in the suit that had they known the safety and autopilot features would still not be functioning by now, they would never have purchased them.
