While it may not snow often in Tyler or Longview or other parts of East Texas, it does get cold.  With rising energy costs, many East Texans turn to alternative fuels to try and save money while staying warm.

Old-fashioned wood burning stoves, kerosene heaters, and even small gas heaters have become popular again.  While this may keep a room warm, that can also make your house very dangerous.

Even before it starts to get cold, inspect your heater, and make sure it is in good working condition.  Inspect the exhaust and other parts of the heater for caulk and build up.  Be sure your heater has an emergency gas shut off.  More importantly, you should never use a fuel-burning appliance without proper ventilation.  Burning coal, kerosene, propane, or other types of fuels can lead to deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

Always keep your wood, kerosene, and other flammables stored outside of the home.  Keep the fuel away from any heat or open flames.

If you have a fireplace, never use flammable liquid to accelerate the fire.  Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace opening.  This prevents flames and embers from escaping and reduces the risk of small children falling into the flames.

Wood burning stoves should be burned hot twice a day for 15 to 30 minutes to reduce the amount of creosote buildup.  Always keep any appliance used for heating clean.
